The most recent success story of the Udupi Nirmithi Kendra is the recently completed Community housing project of the Koraga community in PadebettuatPadubidre village ofKaup Taluk. This project intiated by Integrated Tribal Development Project funded Rs 2,10,000/- and was co-sponsored by Syndicate bank CSR (corporate social responsibility) fund of Rs 10,000/- totalling to Rs 2,20,000/- per beneficiary from the Koraga tribes.
This was not just an other construction project implemented through a government policy but a community inclusive intiativeexperiement by theUdupi Nirmithi Kendra actively involving the community by training and providing expertise to build their own homes.
This measure saved a considerable amount on the labor costs in the sanctioned budget of Rs 2,20,000/- as the community came together to help each other in the process.
Nirmithi Kendra technically monitored the project and appreciated them the benefits of cost saving methods like use of recycled wood for trussing the ceiling. Fourteen homes were constructed by the beneficiaries themselves and the grant amount was directly transferred into their account.
This inclusive project by the Udupi Nirmithi Kendra in the philosophy “of the community: for the community and by the community” where each one help one was a rare social eneterprisewhich motivateada sense of ownership of the project to the Koraga community and a pride that otherwise socially marginalised people like the Koragas are deprived off.
