The most sensitive aspect of the rehabilitation of existing buildings is their structural safety. However, assessment of the structural safety of existing buildings is, in general, a complex task, because the methodologies used differ from those adopted in the current design trends. Like in case of the ancient temple at Kollur where, the eventual strengthening of existing buildings may conflict with the sacred cultural value.
The team at Udupi Nirmithi Kendra under the guidance of the eminent restoration Architect Harish Pai then came into a conclusion on the type of intervention required for the heritage temple at Kollur.
The rooftop of the temple except the sanctum sanctorum roof was claded with Copper sheets , the temple wall exteriors were decorated with the local temple art tradition of kavi arts for wall murals by the artist Purshotham Adve and resurrection of the Ane bagilu or the grand entrance to the temple etc were planned.
The project was designed and delegated keeping in mind the sacred cultural value of the temple.
